The economic area of the Saarlouis District with its almost 211,000 inhabitants and approx. 8,000 companies in the year 2002 offered jobs for around 65,000 employed persons subject to social insurance contributions. Added to this figure are an additional 20,000 self-employed, assisting family members and part-time employees as well as civil servants and judges, in other words altogether more than 80,000 gainfully employed persons.
This level of employment, also in relation to the number of inhabitants, puts the Saarlouis District in second place in the Saarland.
